Local Hendersonville artist and photographer, Kristen Weigel, has found her way in the world of photography through taking high school senior portraits to the next level. Her interest in photography began a little over ten years ago. She photographed anything she could in order to gain experience. Learning from some of the best photographers around paired with a lot of self-study got her off to a good start, but it was hit or miss at first.
“I knew when I started I was not good technically. I had no clue what I was doing. But I could connect with people and I knew what I wanted my images to look like and I was going to have to work very hard to get there,” explains Kristen. “I learn the best by making mistakes, so I am not afraid to try new things and push myself, it just makes me better. When I stop learning I stop growing and I refuse to let that happen. There is always something to learn from everyone. I truly love my job!”
Juggling two busy boys and owning her own business is difficult, but a blessing for her. She likes to do her own thing which usually means not following the rules in photography or business, and it has paid off for Kristen. She was the first high school senior photographer around to offer a full-service studio with a hair and makeup artist and wardrobe stylist to make the experience like no other. Kelly Valente works as the full-time make-up artist while Wendy Hicks works as the full-time wardrobe stylist. “I could not do what I do without them. Not only are they crazy talented, but we get each other’s vision and work so well together. They are my angels and my team… I realize how blessed I am to have them,” she says.
Senior sessions include hair and makeup, and wardrobe styling as well as multiple locations for the session. “We love for it to look like they had four or five completely different photo sessions all within a few hours, all while capturing who they are. Getting to watch seniors start out in a session nervous and leave feeling confident and beautiful or handsome in their own skin without even seeing a picture of themselves, is something we all three feel blessed to be a part of,” Kristen says.
